L.J. Smith to write three new Vampire Diaries prequels – but what about Strange Fate?
109 Comments »According to the BookSeller.com, L.J. Smith will be penning three new books in her Vampire Diaries series. While The Return is focused mainly on Damon, it looks like the new books – which will be prequels to the original series – are going to be all about Stefan, bearing the title Stefan’s Diaries.
Edit: It seems that Stefan’s Diaries is a mysterious TV series tie-in that includes L.J. Smith, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec in the credits.
This is, however, not good news for Night World fans still waiting for the publication of Strange Fate. L.J. Smith posted on her blog that the new Vampire Diaries books will be taking priority of the final installment of the Night World series. Given The Return trilogy has been in the works for a couple of years now, it’s difficult to estimate how long it will take for the new books to be written and for Ms Smith to start working again on Strange Fate. Hang in there, though, Night World fans. We’ve survived for a decade waiting, we can survive a little longer, right?DI

Whatever, we all knew deep down inside with the vampire craze fueled to the sky at the moment that Strange Fate was going to be delayed, again. Especially now that VD has finally caught the multitude’s eye – it’ll be silly to work on Night World because by the time SF is published, the vampire craze would be fizzled out, and the rest of the VD series wouldn’t have the publicity it could have NOW. Logically thinking.

I know i was so excited for it to be published. I woke really early and was one of the first people to the book store but when i asked if they had the person told me the release date was changed and i was so sad :(. well at least i’ll have time to finish my other seven or eight books that i have ot read first :/

Why can’t she freaking finish the last book off and make her fans happy? half of them were teens when the books came out now their in their 20′s early 30′s.. i liked the vampire diaries show at first but then it got so freaking confusing… shes adopted, her birth mothers a vampire, she acts like such a bitch!

I understand that Vampires are all the rage now, but it’s pretty stupid to keep fans waiting for over 11 years for a book. People who were into this book at 13 are now supposed to go read it at 23, oh I mean 24, oh wait I mean 30… If it even comes out then! Maybe someone else will write a book about vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, and witches and she will finally be able to finish this series and hope it rides the other authors coat tails to fame! This series has a lot of fans also and it’s not fair to ignore one set of fans for another. It’s a good way to lose fans, just saying.

Yeah…it’s approaching ridiculous. I know VD is popular. I even enjoy VD and eagerly anticipate the next one. But really…11 years? I picked up Witchlight a LONG time ago (Yeah. I’m in the 10+ year club.–first NW book I ever read–and loved it so much that I immediately went after the others. It was one thing when the sequel was never coming…but there was a release date. I’m an author myself (nope. Not telling name/book(s) here. Used a pseudonym.) and can’t imagine being given a solid release date (and not only that, passing it on to my fans!) and then turning around and saying, “Oh, no, sorry, not really. I’m not in the mood to work on that one just now.”
::Sigh:: I think I’m just going to go back to assuming that NW ends with Book 9. In my private fantasy world, the world they inhabit ended in 2000 as predicted, and no one survived to tell the story. If LJ ever gets around to proving me wrong, it’ll be a happy surprise.
Or not. The SF release currently planned doesn’t match my set anyway.

Why would anyone want to do this??? I have waited and waited for this book. I’m almost tempted to boycot all future writings from her and this publisher. It isn’t right that you push the release date back so many times! Finish one then move to something new. As of now I am not interested in reading anymore of her books, for fear that this will happen again.

I have come to decide after reading the series (two years ago I picked up a random book in the summer by suggestion of a student of mine), that Strange Fate is necessary. It even has me on end. How am I, an educator, going to be able to recommend a book series without a proper ending? I love the concept, the idea, and it can connect to high school students (it is not about vampires and shapeshifters, it is about relationship and connection, understanding). LJ, hurry up and get done with the Vampire Diaries (not very entertaining to me but some of my students love it) so I, along with my students, can enjoy and EPIC conclusion!

I am very upset that the book has been postponed this many times. I kept bickering about how much I wanted to get this book as soon as it came out (April 6). So my husband and I went to Borders to get the book and found out that it wasn’t coming out until April 26. I was upset, but it wasn’t that long so I could wait, I had already waited years. Now waiting another year is going to kill me! I want this book! I need this book! Please release it as soon as possible! I like VD as well, but it is nothing at all like Night World. So, just release the book so we can all finallly end our obsession and move on to something else.

I understand the vampire craze going around. I’m hooked on them too, but seriously, we’ve been waiting for Strange Fate for years now. I’m so tired of VD this and VD that. One of my friends keeps trying to get me to read them and i keep having to tell her, i’m not reading them until Strange Fate comes out. NW is so much better than VD anyway. I’m just saying, that book has been on my list for about two years now. I’m very tired of having to postpone getting it. I want to know what happens. If Smith isn’t going to finish the book, we have a right to know, right? I mean, at least say that you have to make up your own ending for the NW series, right? I’ve looked at countless bookstores for this book only to be disappointed each time. Why must the eager readers of the NW series be punished because VD is more popular right now? I also disagree with moving the publishing dates around, it’s bad enough to be told that the new book isn’t out yet. it’s even worst to say that it’s coming out the 6 of April, then move it to the 26 of April, then the 6 of July of 2011. I mean, really people? Come on, just give us our book and be done with it. We all want Smith to take her time with the book, and i fully understand the distractions that different ideas can give you, but Smith started NW BEFORE VD. The only acceptable excuse for not finishing a series is if the author dies (which has happened), but even then, the author had the notes laid out and the series is being finished! So why can’t a living and healthy author finish this series?

HAHAHA that’s so funny, you deplore them to study harder in school…and I’m not really sure what the definition of shud is in that paragraph, I don’t think I’ve heard that word before (maybe you mean should?). I guess you should have studied a little harder in school yourself. I’m really sorry to hear that she has had family problems, but most of the people here are complaining not because it was delayed a little while, but because after being delayed over and over again for 10 years now, instead of finishing the series (after giving out and then changing release dates)she is going to change the release date yet again so she can finish her other series first. Clearly you’re just here looking to contradict what everyone else has to say. I find that just a tad bit immature, however I do agree that the 14 year old was a bit out of line with the language. Then again he/she is FOURTEEN!! And how old are you? Your really going to start internet drama with a 14 year old because they said fuck, gay and wrote with some bad spelling/grammar? ONE- Yes, there was a family crises back in the late 90′s early 2000′s that made her postpone the book. That’s fully understandable. BUT, 11+ years later she’s thrown the NW series on the back burner because VD is so popular and no doubt bringing in more money then NW.. Now lets examine that statement for a moment. . . . . It sounds a bit money hungry to me!!
TWO- to your comment below, if her show has nothing to do with the books and she isn’t money hungry, she wouldn’t promote the show even if she did make money from it. Think Anne Rice with the ‘Queen of the Damned’ Movie, she admitted that it was crap even if it brought her in a few bucks.
I myself am not a huge fan of the Twilight craze, but I have to hand it to Stephanie Myers; her movies, so far, have stayed true to the books, save for a few minor changes here and there that mean nothing. I don’t believe she is money hungry, I just believe she gives her fans what they want, rather then broken promises and dashed hopes like Lisa Jane Smith has.
So what I have to say to you is grow up and look at it from all perspectives. I myself wasn’t mad until the last release date was moved again. Now I think all Night World fans have every right to be upset with her and even stop reading/buying her books until SF come out!!

Years ago i finished witchlight. I was thrilled and excited about getting the next FINAL conclusion. This was YEARS AGO. I have come to accept the sad conclusion that Strange Fate will never reach my bookshelf. Others have to too. It is simply not going to happen. Eyeing LJSmith’s blog for the last few years, i gradually became more and more agitated at how the release dates are continually being pushed back. Surely LJ should know that she is only exhausting and angering her fans?? I understand that LJSmith has undergoed illness and other problems in her life, but I am simply frustrated by the face that obviously, she is able to write again. But it ISN’T our book! Where is this final installment? I have read the vamp diaries and sadly, they do not clench my Night World thirst! And ‘Urallabunchofwhiners’ should consider those fans waiting for years on end and the dashed hopes time after time after time.

i truly hope this new date(JULY 6 2011) holds. I have been waiting forever for Strange Fate to complete my collection on my shelf…but sadly it hasn’t:( Its a big void spot. it really saddens me. I believe you are an amazing author with so much creativity but your decision to publish a VD book before the LAST NW book, i believe, was a poor choice. I just discovered the postponed release date and can’t help but be disappointed. I’m not such a fan of the vampire craze currently dominating the scene, I’ve read most of them and while entertaining none capture the same quality of the Night World, even the Vampire Diaries.
Though I can see the logic behind pursuing material that will ultimatly make more money (and there are probably contractual obligations involved too) I too hail from the 11+ year wait. I will be 27 if the book is actually released when they say this time, I’m not sure knowing it’s likely to be a 1000+ page epic will be enough.
I don’t usually whinge, given her circumstances and even respecting the muse an all that but being pushed aside for new VD makes me sad and want to pout a little. You should finish one task before you start another, especially after I went out and bought all the new Anthology editions with the funky new covers in addition to the original releases I bought way back when!
Besides attempting to pinch fans away from the Meyers contingent is a silly strategy. They should be focusing on Strange Fate and aiming for the wider audience that NW can pull in what with the witch/shifter element (not everyone is a huge vampire fan! :D) Bring on Strange Fate before all this nonsense starts to eclipse the quality of the books in the first place!
P.S. I also read on the website that there is a sequel to Forbidden Game in the works – apparently after Strange Fate (darn exciting!)

Is there even a set release date now? I’ve heard January of 2011 and April of 2011… I was thinking 2012 might be fun, though, since the plan for 2000 didn’t work out. I’m impatient enough, being a teenager now and having only read the republished omnibus versions– I’ve only been waiting a year or so; I can’t begin to imagine what everyone who’s been holding out for twelve years is going through.
I am, however, very excited about the possibility of a Forbidden Game sequel, despite my disgust with the idea of more VD books. The Return is pretty much a joke; I’m even more worried about prequels.

Maybe it’s time a petition was started!! surley if every NW fan signed an online petition to get SF out before the rest of the VD books it would get LJ Smiths attention, I have been waiting 12+ years for this book and I am now getting fed up, I have just started re reading the original 9 books for something to do, no other books come close to NW, I have read VD and thought it was ok but I’m sure if they pushed NW like they have VD it would be more popular, it just needs the attention that they are giving VD!!

My mum suggested that all us night world fans write to the publishers saying that unless Strange Fate is released we are going to boycot the publisher and the auther, you know put pressure on the publisher to pressurise Lisa Jane Smith into publishing this book. i’ve been waiting awhile for this book (not as long as most) but does she even realise that night world is being taken out of stores now?! Walmart has already dropped the series and soon actual book stores will too. Truthfully NW deserves the show and at least a proper ending instead of fanfiction ones. Am I going to have to write my own Srange Fate and publish it myself then probably get sued for a book that i don’t think she has even started on besides the name? I tried reading VD but it just didn’t make me want to shut up,sit down and read. I was so sucked into NW that my last book got taken away at school! Buying these books i thought they had all come out within the last 5 years. Now that i know strage fate has been delayed for more than a decade I’m really nervous to read the last story and to be disappointed again by waiting. I got each book in the volume and all at once I read all of the first 9 books, but now I want to read Strange Fate soo bad. Until then I am going to read LJS’s Dark Visions. Btw, Night World is way better than the Vampire Diaries!

I find it really irritating that she keeps getting her fans hopes up by giving release dates and then letting us down… ARGH! >:(
At least LJS could have the decency to stay with what she has said and just RELEASE THE BOOK ALREADY!
I love her books, and I’m excited to hear that she’s thinking of creating a sequel to the Forbidden Games, but by the time she’s taking to finish the Night World series… I doubt we’ll see the forbidden games sequel for another decade at least…

I am one of the fans of the NW series who has been waiting well over 10 years for Strange Fate to be published. LJ Smith completely disappeared for a number of years, and we all despaired of ever reading any more of her work. However she did start writing again, and we were all overjoyed. BUT she didn’t, and still hasn’t, completed the NW series, and I for one am bitterly disappointed. I never appreciated the VD books as much as NW, and quite frankly cannot be bothered to read the newer volumes, as I feel that to continue with the VD (when the first set was completely autonomous)over a series that was never finished is a damn shame and offensive to all of LJ Smith’s readers. As much as I want to read SF I am seriously considering boycotting it as I am so annoyed with LJ Smith’s behaviour in regards to allowing release dates to be finalised but never coming up with the goods.

ughh i am so pissed ive been waiting for this damn book for five years!!! i honestly still dont get why she wants to write more for the VD series before she starts the last night world book.
honestly the first VD book was good but it just sucked in all the books after that, the tv series…..? i tried (emphasis on tried) to watch it but everytime i missed an episode id be really confused for the next one so i just gave up:( . anyway when maybe makin a movie for this im not sure. id love to see Ash in a movie (i love him*sigh*) but still wat if they ruin it? they already ruined twilight, i just hope that wont happen to city of bones. lastly i REALLY hope to see SF on the shelves soon or i swear……….someones gonna pay………..ughh

2014…..really smith really….screw this I give up which is kind of funny because I recently finished witch light and was now searching for strange fate to order online to come across this catastrophe smith has caused….wow I sooooo wished I re searched more about the bloody thing before I decided to read it, now….I don’t know actually I guess I would make up my own ending and forget about the book and if in the future am walking down the street, passing a book store to find strange fate has finally been released and is in stock it would be a pleasant surprise but in the mean time if you ever read this smith just PLEASE!!!! RELEASE THE BLOODY BOOK!!!! hey every one. I have been reading lj smith since I was 15. vd was all right sc was a little better. I can say this I read all of her books until strange fate. now I am 35 and i am still waiting for strange fate so I can know what happens. I refuse to pick up another of her books until strange fate is out. I did try to watch the vd tv series but all I got is one show in and got pissed about it because it wasn’t going with the book at all. so, until strange fate comes out I will not get another lj smith book until I read the one I have been waiting for 10+ years now

If you’re sick of waiting for SF, as I am, J R Ward has an awesome Vampire Series, called: “The Black Dagger Brotherhood”. Lynn Viehl also has a Series called “Darkyn” & she’s just started on “Kyndred”, which is a continuation of the “Darkyn”. I also like Sherrylin Kenyon’s: “Dark Hunter” Series. These writers won’t leave you hanging on the edge of your seats for too long, but the books are VERY racy! Awesome read, garaunteed :)These should hopefully keep us all going until L J Smith decides she can be bothered with SF or maybe after these books, we just won’t care too much about SF?? Who knows??? I stumbled across this site while i was searching for Strange Fate’s release date. Fortunately, I can say that I have not been one of the people that have had to wait for the book for 11 years now. Because for one, I would have died waiting. I picked up an intresting looking book two years ago, and was happy to read it. That was Volume 1. Then, I read the next volume. I wasn’t exactly burning to read the next book because the first 2 volumes ended on a good note. But when I started the last volume a week ago, I get it. You don’t stop writing after that! Not when you made it seem like you can continue it. You say the world is gonna end, you say that there are 4 wild powers and you’ve given us only 3. I feel awful for those who’ve had to wait 11 years and now, with the possibility of her releasing it in 2014, they have an even longer wait ahead of them, and it’s like she stuck you in one point of time, since she’s focused of the millenium.

She only got fired from Harper/Alloy, and technically only from TVD. Night World is with Simon and Schuster, and she owns all the rights so can’t be fired from those.

I feel utterly let down by an author who does not care enough for her own work to reach its denouement. Better to not publish at all than to not publish an end; building up a fanbase then not giving them an appropriate finish mirrors stabbing them in the back, then spitting on their still flushed corpse. People who buy the “new” series nightworld- for this is how it has been portrayed in bookshops with its glossy new covers- don’t realise that they are buying into something wonderful and bitterly disappointing. It’s deception. It is wrong. Publish the end or don’t glamorise the series for a new generation to be disappointed by.

Ive had SF preordered for nearly a year now, the date it was set to be released according to play.com was early march 2012..its changed now to ‘Due for release on 03 December 2018.’ wth is going on with this!!!!
